And the Lord did grin
I am writing to you from work. MY LAST DAY OF WORK.
I am so psyched. I should not be this psyched. I'm gonna take some time off, I'm gonna get healthy again, I'm gonna go to sleep when it's dark and wake up when it's light, I'm gonna go to church...SQUEE!
And, like I did this summer, I'm gonna treat writing like my job. Which is good, because in addition to the remainder of The Halfway Point, I have SO MANY PROJECTS planned.
1. A long multichapter Mike coming-of-age story.
2. Three more Quality Time entries (thus far the themes are "getting stuck," "Murphy's law," and "getting lost," all featuring one domestic plot and one slightly larger-scale plot much like "To the Rescue").
3. A sequel (bizarrely enough) to The Halfway Point. Well, maybe a fic in the Halfway Point AU. Either way, it's a fic, it takes place after The Halfway Point. But it'll be more like Eighteen Minutes.
4. A short multichapter inspired by an OT episode.
5. No less than EIGHT Christmas fics for (close) friends, one of which is the flip side of Underdark at the request of its amazing author. Friends of mine, don't take it personally if you get a drabble. I'll do my best!
6. A horror story featuring Raph.
7. A multichapter that features, possibly, the discovery of the turtles. As in, ACTUAL DISCOVERY. Not "Mary Sue makes friends with turtles and tells no one."
8. WHEW! Two cowrites.
9. A Halloween fic with Leo and ghosts that I never finished. And I want to finish it.
10. A Mike-and-Raph-centric multichapter inspired by "The King."
In other words...
3 fics for the laughs and kicks--Quality Time
7 fics for Christmas, one a birthday, too
9 with various plots in mind
1 fic for Tori's increasing zoo
In the land of LJ where the fanfics lie
One fic to rule them all, one fic to find them,
One fic to bring them all and in the darkness bind them
In the land of LJ where the fanfics lie.
In other other words...
12 hallucinations
11 feet till bottom
10 attic trinkets
9 ticked-off gangsters
8 Christmas giftfics
7 hours of traffic
6 light adventures
5 thousand words
4 missing spirits
3 nice guys
2 cowritten fics
And an inspiration from "The King."
So that's...20 stories altogether? A lot of people don't write that many EVER. Fortunately, I've been very active on this RPG some friends and I have going on (go to the the terrapintarts community to see the logs) and I don't think I have any big scenes coming up, so RPing for that right now is pretty much going to be at my leisure. Maybe I can get some of this stuff done. Still, I might have to adopt out some of these bunnies. I think 6, 7, and 10 are the ones I'm the least attached to. I've already started writing on #8, #9, and the first Quality Time fic. So yes, 6, 7, and 10 are up for negotiation. ONLY 6, 7 and 10. If you're interested in adopting a bunny, let me know.
All this said, I'd like to take a moment to rant about the rampaging "little brother" thing going on in this fandom. I guess the main problem is the fact that so few females know how to write males being males. See, if a girl refers to her sister as "little sister," it's a term of endearment. No insult intended or taken. However, if a boy refers to his brother as "little brother," it's derogatory. Males don't like being referred to as "little" in any sense. I mean, yes, in the new movie, Leo calls Mikey "little brother." But that's to Mikey, who tends to let things like that roll off his back. Shell. Whatever. If he called DON that, it would be insulting. Calling RAPH that would be asking to get his head taken off. I think the worst part of this comes in whenever I see Raph calling Don "little brother." I hate that, and not because I consider Don to be one of the older two. Not only would it offend Don, but it's misleading. Don is no one's "little brother." He's a younger brother. Not a little brother. Writers see this "little brother" thing as a sign that it's okay for them to make Don act like a dear little kid. It's a symptom of Girly!Don. A lot of writers who refer to Don as someone's little brother miss the inherent maturity in Don. And even though I think Raph is younger, Don should not be calling Raph his "little brother." Neither should Leo. Not unless one of them wants to push his buttons, and it's not even the kind of insult Don would use.
Furthermore, protectiveness is not an exclusively "older sibling" quality. The guys are all protective of each other. Just because Don doesn't seem especially protective of Raph does not make him younger. Raph isn't especially protective of Don, either. When it comes to Raph, Don is more of the kind of older sibling I grew up with--alternately nagging and indulgent. He nags in the new movie. In NT, he makes him the shell cycle. So quit using Raph's general protectiveness as "proof" that Raph is older. It's STILL not canon.
On a further geeky note, the lodge's angel got fixed today. It's this angel made of Christmas lights, and yesterday, one of its wings went out. I called it our "One-Winged Angel." Of course no one knew what I was talking about.

My younger brother calls me his "little sister" based on the fact that I'm over a foot shorter than he is. If I called him "little brother" other than ironically, he'd HURT me. Possibly permanently.
I'm a Raph fan and a Movie 1 (1990) fan, so sue me if my first (teenage) assumption was L,R,D,M with Raph also as 2iC. I know better about canon birth order now and Don being "in charge" while Leo was gone in the 2007 Movie does not change my opinion that Raph is 2iC. 2iC does NOT mean "substitute" if the CO is no longer THERE. Anyone who made Raph leader would have to be NUTS; but a 2iC who can think for himself and make the leader really THINK about what he's doing is kinda valuable.
And since I see any ACTUAL chronological age gaps (as opposed to gaps in maturity) as being so small as to be irrelevant... I think that with the exception of Mikey (who CHOOSES to play the "little brother" card at times) any use of big/little or even older/younger is - once the four reach adulthood - comparatively meaningless or ironic.
ANYWAY, your Girly!Don rant has provoked a one-shot fanfic which I will post to my LJ in due course. Just wanted to let you know. ;)

Whether or not Raph is a believable 2iC, I think, depends on the universe. In Mirage, it would be unthinkable to give Raph that much responsibility--he was THAT unstable. On the other hand, in the new movie, I could absolutely see it. And you have a great point about the 2iC not having to be a substitute for the actual leader, because in that case, Raph WOULD be a fantastic 2iC.
I'm also one of those who doesn't think Don was "officially" in charge. I'll buy it in a fanfic, but I don't consider it actual canon. Don saw gaps that needed to be filled, and he tried to fill them. It seems to be more of a domestic duty than anything else, anyway.

In Vol 1, when Leo comes flying through April's apartment window beat half to death on Christmas Eve, it's Don who takes charge, rather dramatically, as soon as the Foot begin crashing in. He orders everyone into position, including Splinter as I recall, and then pointedly tells Raphael, "No heroics!"
(And of course as soon as Don's out of sight, Raph immediately takes out two Foot with one move and is quite smug about it, praising himself with the infamous "leafhopper" quote.)
(I love nerding out quoting chapter and verse....hee!)
